Emerging from the musical womb that is New Orleans, Mother, Wife, artist, and Visionary, Sunni Patterson, combines the heritage and tradition of her native town with an enlightened modern world view to create music and poetry that is timeless in its groove....
Armed with an engaging story, voice, and presence, Sunni has been the featured performer at many of the Nation's premier spoken word venues, including HBO's Def Poetry Jam and BET's Lyric Cafe. She was also featured on the Arsenio Hall show performing the song, “Black Unicorn”, with rapper 2Chainz and singer Chrisette Michelle. She has had the privilege of sharing her work on several international stages including Ghana, West Africa, Jamaica, Trinidad, and the Netherlands. Her poetry has also allowed her to be a speaker at the famed “Momentum TEDWomen 2015” Talk/Conference in Monterey, California. Inspired by her words, Beats by Dre commissioned Sunni to provide the soundscape for tennis great, Serena Williams', workout (wireless beats) commercial, and the congratulatory piece for Williams' third US Open win (Congratulations Serena ft. Sunni Patterson).
An advocate for Holistic Healing and Health, Sunni's work is dedicated to the growth and evolution of humanity. As a highly sought after lecturer, workshop facilitator, and performer, she deliberately uses art as a tool to recognize, address, and eliminate all forms of oppression. She has trained under great scholars, allowing her to become a Certified Professional Life Coach (CPC), a certified instructor of Chi Kung (Qi Gong) and Tai Chi for Health, and a diligent student in the healing and spiritual arts.
Sunni has been honored with several awards, including the Eve Ensler “V to the Tenth Anti Violence Movement” award for her work with Gulfcoast women and girls. She has also received two NUSPA awards (National Underground Spoken Word Poetry Awards) for the Most Inspirational Poet in 2010 and 2011. Most recently, she received the Toni Cade Bambara Award for Cultural Leadership.
Believing in the transformational role poetry and spoken word plays, Sunni's mission is to aid in the awakening, the revival, and the remembrance of our gifts and voices, enabling us to move to a greater space of self empowerment, creativity, and actualization.
Whether she is asked to officiate a wedding, perform a baby blessing ceremony, lead a workshop, or feature on a Hip Hop album with some of the top rappers and performers in the industry, it shows her depth, range and even her commitment to effect spiritual awareness, community activism/building and social change.
There is so much more to say about her, but words just cannot describe her way, her Spirit, her grace, or gift of healing. In every word/sound she utters, you hear the grit and grime, hope and love, problem and solution, optimism and faith. She is a mouth piece for the Ancestors, a vessel used to promote goodness in a world where oppression and injustice seems the order of the day. What a blessing it is to feel her warm and nourishing rays shine light on your soul!
